The Litter-Robot 4 and the PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin both rotate to sift clumps into a sealed drawer, both track your cat's weight in an app, and both work with clumping litter. On manufacturer list prices, the SmartSpin costs $399.99 and the Litter-Robot 4 starts at $699, a gap of about $299. This comparison goes through what each manufacturer documents, so you can decide whether the extra money buys something your household needs.
Quick verdict
Short version
Choose the Litter-Robot 4 if you have three or four cats, a very large cat near 25 lb, or a cat that may need a long adjustment period. Whisker states a 4-cat rating, publishes a 15.75 in. entryway, and offers a 90-day in-home trial.
Choose the ScoopFree SmartSpin if you have one or two cats under 25 lb, want to keep using a litter your cats already like, or want to keep about $299 in your pocket. PetSafe says it works with "any litter" and offers a 45-day return window on petsafe.com.

Design and how they clean
Both are enclosed, rotating designs. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 uses a patented sifting process that separates waste from clean litter after each use and drops clumps into a sealed drawer in the base. It uses laser and weight sensors to detect entry and exit before starting a countdown. PetSafe says the SmartSpin "senses when your cat has safely exited and quietly sifts away waste into a sealed drawer." It also highlights a smooth interior with no grooves, so litter doesn't get caught, which makes the occasional deep clean easier.
Cornell's Feline Health Center notes most cats prefer uncovered boxes. If your cat already uses a hooded box, either machine should feel familiar. If your cat has only used open pans, plan for a slower introduction with either one.
Cat size and entry
On published numbers, the Litter-Robot 4 gives the most information and the most room. Whisker lists a 15.75 in. square entryway and 16.5 in. of interior height, and explicitly mentions large breeds such as Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats within its 3–25 lb range.
PetSafe states the SmartSpin is "built with your cat's safety in mind, just 12 in. from the ground with a cozy design for cats up to 25 lb," but doesn't publish entry width or interior dimensions. Both top out at the same 25 lb, but only Whisker gives you the measurements to check against a big cat.
At the small end: Whisker sets a 3 lb minimum for automatic use and describes a supervised semi-automatic routine for smaller kittens. A Target listing gives the SmartSpin's minimum as 2.2 lb. We couldn't find that figure on PetSafe's own page.
Edge: Litter-Robot 4, for its published dimensions and large-breed guidance.
Multi-cat use
This is the clearest difference. Whisker rates one Litter-Robot 4 for up to 4 cats. PetSafe calls the SmartSpin "ideal for multi-cat households" but gives no number. Its 6 L drawer is rated for "up to 2 weeks," and PetSafe doesn't say for how many cats. Either way, veterinary guidance recommends one box per cat plus one, so a second simple box is wise with either machine. See our multi-cat guide.
Edge: Litter-Robot 4.
Litter compatibility
The SmartSpin is more flexible. PetSafe calls it "compatible with any litter" and recommends a premium clumping litter for best performance. If your cats are attached to a particular clumping litter, that's a real advantage.
Whisker is more specific. It recommends a "high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter." It says some silica crystals work if they pass through the screen, but white or translucent litters can affect the litter-level and drawer-full readings. Plant-based, non-clumping, newspaper and wood-pellet litters typically don't work. Whisker also claims the Litter-Robot 4 uses up to 50% less litter (a manufacturer claim).
Edge: SmartSpin, for flexibility.
Odor control and emptying
Both seal waste away from the litter bed:
- Litter-Robot 4: sealed waste drawer plus a carbon filter, with optional OdorTrap packs. Whisker recommends replacing the filter and packs every 2–4 weeks. Whisker says that with fewer or smaller cats you may only need to empty the drawer as rarely as once every 8 days. It also says the unit works with regular trash bags as well as its own liners.
- SmartSpin: sealed 6 L drawer with an integrated deodorizer. PetSafe claims "4x better odor control" than traditional boxes and up to two weeks between emptying. The box includes two deodorizer packs. PetSafe's page doesn't give a replacement interval for the SmartSpin specifically. For its OpenSky model, PetSafe advises changing the deodorizer every 15 days.
Neither manufacturer's odor claim has been independently verified, as far as we could find. Real-world odor will depend most on litter, emptying frequency and filter changes.
Edge: roughly even. SmartSpin claims a longer interval between emptying. Litter-Robot 4 publishes more detailed upkeep guidance.
App, data and subscriptions
Both apps track weight and litter box use over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Whisker app: real-time litter and drawer levels, per-cat weights via SmartScale, and custom notifications. The free tier shows 7 days of visits and weights. Whisker+ (paid) adds up to 2 years of history, trends, daily recaps and duration tracking.
- PetSafe Pet Companion app: real-time weight updates and litter box usage, with alerts. We found no mention of a paid tier on the SmartSpin page.
Health tracking is most useful as an early nudge. Cornell lists straining, frequent urination and urinating outside the box among signs of urinary disease. With an automatic box you can't see clumps, so watch your cat as well as the graphs.
Edge: Litter-Robot 4 for depth of data; SmartSpin for no visible subscription.
Size, placement and setup
The Litter-Robot 4's 22 × 27 in. footprint is large. Whisker says it's comparable to a large traditional pan. It weighs 24 lb empty. Whisker notes weight readings are most accurate on a firm surface and sells a Carpet Tray for thicker carpet. The SmartSpin measures about 20.9 × 19.3 × 26.4 in. according to Target's listing, so it's likely somewhat smaller on the floor. Both need an outlet.
Edge: SmartSpin, for a likely smaller footprint (based on retailer dimensions).
Trial, warranty and support
For a $400–$700 purchase that your cat might reject, the return window matters:
- Litter-Robot 4: 90-day in-home trial on purchases from Whisker.com or Litter-Robot.com. You pay return shipping. Units bought elsewhere follow that seller's policy. WhiskerCare 1-year coverage is included and covers accidental damage, power surges, and mechanical and electrical breakdowns. A 3-year plan comes with most bundles.
- SmartSpin: 45-day satisfaction guarantee on petsafe.com. The product page we reviewed doesn't state a warranty term, so check PetSafe's warranty terms before buying.
Whisker also says the Litter-Robot 4 may be HSA/FSA eligible through a third-party service (Flex) with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Eligibility varies and isn't guaranteed.
Edge: Litter-Robot 4.
Price and value
| Litter-Robot 4 | ScoopFree SmartSpin | |
|---|---|---|
| Base unit | From $699 | $399.99 |
| Bundles | Various (3-year WhiskerCare with most bundles) | $379.99–$449.99 (adds mat, liners, deodorizers) |
| Recurring items | Clumping litter, liners or trash bags, carbon filter / OdorTrap packs every 2–4 weeks | Clumping litter, waste bin liners, deodorizer packs |
The roughly $299 premium for the Litter-Robot 4 mainly buys three documented things: a stated 4-cat rating, published large-cat dimensions, and a trial twice as long, plus a defined 1-year warranty. If none of those matter for your household, the SmartSpin covers the core job (automatic sifting, sealed drawer, weight tracking) for much less.

FAQ
Is the Litter-Robot 4 worth $300 more than the SmartSpin?
For multi-cat homes, large cats or nervous cats, the documented extras (4-cat rating, published entry size, 90-day trial, 1-year warranty) can justify it. For one or two average-size cats, the SmartSpin covers the essentials for less.
Can I use crystal litter in either?
PetSafe says the SmartSpin works with any litter but recommends premium clumping. Whisker says some silica crystals can work in the Litter-Robot 4 if they pass through the screen, but white or translucent litters may affect its sensors and aren't recommended.
Which is quieter?
Neither manufacturer publishes a decibel figure for these two models. Whisker markets "QuietSift" cycles, and PetSafe says the SmartSpin "quietly sifts." We can't rank them without measured data.
Can I buy either through Amazon?
When we checked, Litter-Robot 4 listings on Amazon.com were sold by third-party sellers. We didn't confirm SmartSpin's Amazon availability. Whisker says its 90-day trial only applies to purchases from Whisker.com or Litter-Robot.com, and that purchases elsewhere follow that seller's return policy. Check the seller and return terms before you buy.
