Shopping for an automatic litter box gets overwhelming fast. Prices run from about $100 to $900, every box claims to be "odor-free," and the details that actually matter (weight limits, how low the entry is, what litter it needs) are buried in the fine print. This page is the short version: six picks, grouped so you can find yours by budget and by cat, with the trade-offs spelled out.
Want every spec for 20 models in one table? That's our full self-cleaning litter box comparison. This page is for when you just want to know what to buy.
Quick picks
- Best overall: Litter-Robot 4 ($699). Up to 4 cats, 3–25 lb, and Wirecutter's top pick after testing.
- Best budget: CATLINK Scooper Open-X, Multi-Cat ($199). Open top, 12 L drawer, and Wirecutter's budget pick.
- Best mid-price with a low step: PETKIT Purobot Max 3 ($399.99). An 8 in entrance for seniors and short-legged cats.
- Best for health tracking: PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2 ($499.99). Camera plus weight to tell cats apart.
- Best uncovered: Petlibro Luma ($599.99). Self-cleaning without a hood, plus a wide 17.4 in entrance.
- Cheapest way in: PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic ($99.95). One cat under 15 lb that's fine with crystal litter.
Prices above are each maker's list price on Oct 19, 2026. Amazon's price may be higher or lower on any given day.
Before you buy: 5 quick checks
These five questions rule out more boxes than any feature list.
- What does your biggest cat weigh? Every machine has a weight range, and many top out at 22–25 lb. If your cat is bigger (or still growing into a big breed), see our guide to the best litter box for large cats.
- What does your smallest cat weigh? Most boxes need a cat of at least 3–3.3 lb before they'll run automatically. Kittens below that need manual mode or a regular box for now.
- Covered or open? Cornell notes most cats prefer uncovered boxes. If your cat already uses a hooded box happily, a globe is fine. If not, look at open designs like the Luma or Open-X.
- Can you live with the litter rules? Most use regular clumping litter. PetSafe crystal models need PetSafe's own trays, which you'll keep buying.
- Do you have the space and the floor? These are big (the Litter-Robot 4 needs about 22 × 27 in), they need an outlet, and several need a hard floor so their weight sensors read correctly.
The 4 kinds of automatic litter box
"Automatic" covers a few different designs. Knowing which kind you're looking at tells you a lot about how it'll behave.
- Rotating globe (Litter-Robot 4, Luma): the whole drum turns slowly to sift clumps into a drawer underneath. Usually the roomiest inside. Takes up a lot of floor.
- Drum with a side opening (PETKIT Purobot, CATLINK Open-X): a drum spins on its side to sift. Often lower to the floor and a bit cheaper.
- Rake over crystal litter (PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal): a rake pushes waste into a covered trough on a disposable tray. Cheap to buy, but you keep buying trays.
- Rake over clumping litter (other PetSafe ScoopFree models): similar idea, but with regular clumping litter.
Whatever the type, skip any design where a door rotates closed over the opening. Cats.com reported a cat allegedly killed in an Amztoy-style box like that, and warns that similar designs are still sold. Look for multiple sensor types and an opening that stays open.
The picks
Litter-Robot 4: best overall
Whisker
Litter-Robot 4
Rotating-globe design that sifts clumps into a sealed drawer after each visit. Whisker rates one unit for up to 4 cats weighing 3–25 lb.
- Cats supportedUp to 4 (per Whisker)
- Cat weight3–25 lb
- Entryway15.75 in × 15.75 in
- Footprint22 in × 27 in
- LitterClumping clay recommended
- Trial / warranty90-day trial; 1-yr WhiskerCare
Manufacturer list price: from $699 (litter-robot.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
If you want the safest bet and can afford it, this is it. Wirecutter picked it as its top automatic box after hands-on testing, calling it "spacious and repairable, and it's easy to clean and customize." On paper it fits the most households: cats from 3 to 25 lb, up to 4 cats, a wide 15.75 in entry and regular clumping clay litter. Whisker even publishes how often to empty the drawer: about every two weeks with one cat, weekly with two. Whisker's 90-day in-home trial on direct purchases also takes some of the risk out of a $699 decision.
What we like
- Wirecutter top pick after testing
- Fits 3–25 lb cats, up to 4 cats
- Uses regular clumping clay
- 90-day trial when bought from Whisker
Watch-outs
- $699 list price
- Big footprint
- Covered globe with one way in and out
- Weight-based cat ID can mix up cats within about 1 lb (Whisker)
CATLINK Scooper Open-X (Multi-Cat): best budget
CATLINK
Scooper Open-X (Multi-Cat version)
Open-top drum with a 12 L drawer for $199. Buy the Multi-Cat version: the $169 single-cat version charges $30 to unlock multi-cat ID.
- Cat weight3.3 lb minimum, 6 months+ (max not stated)
- Entrance height13.8 in
- Waste drawer12 L; 4–7 days with multiple cats (CATLINK)
- Dimensions25.6 × 23.6 × 27.5 in
- Warranty1 year
- Returns90 days
Manufacturer list price: $199 (catlinkus.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
Most cheap automatic boxes aren't worth the risk. Wirecutter found most had "serious safety issues or a reputation for breaking down quickly," and named the $199 Open-X as the exception. It's open on top, has a big 12 L drawer and is designed so the opening can't close on a cat. The trade-offs: a clunky app (per Wirecutter), a 1-year warranty, and a 13.8 in step-in height that may be a stretch for older cats. Make sure you buy the Multi-Cat version. The $169 single-cat version charges $30 to unlock multi-cat ID.
What we like
- $199 list price
- Open top
- Large 12 L drawer
- Wirecutter's budget pick
Watch-outs
- Clunky app (Wirecutter)
- 1-year warranty
- 13.8 in step-in height
PETKIT Purobot Max 3: best mid-price with a low step
PETKIT
Purobot Max 3
Low 8 in entrance and a 7 L bin at $399.99. Weight-based cat tracking only, and a 22 lb ceiling.
- Cat weight3.3–22 lb, 6 months+
- Entrance height8.03 in
- Waste bin7 L, up to 15 days for 1 cat
- Dimensions24.4 × 21.2 × 21.7 in
- Unit weight22 lb
- FloorHard surface required
Manufacturer list price: $399.99 (petkit.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
The Max 3 is a good middle ground if $699 is too much but you want more than the basics. Its 8.03 in entrance is one of the lowest we found, which helps senior, stiff or short-legged cats, and the Amazon listing describes a 10.5 in opening. It handles cats from 3.3 to 22 lb and needs a hard floor for its weight sensors. One thing to know: the Amazon bundle we link says it doesn't include the N60 deodorizer housing, which some buyers expected. This pick is spec-based. We haven't found independent hands-on testing of the Max 3 yet.
What we like
- Low 8 in entrance
- Opening stays open while it cleans (PETKIT)
- Up to 15 days per bin with one cat (PETKIT)
Watch-outs
- 22 lb cat limit
- Hard floor required
- No camera
- Amazon bundle excludes the N60 deodorizer housing
PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2: best for health tracking
PETKIT
Purobot Max Pro 2
Drum-style box with an AI camera that PETKIT says can tell similar-weight cats apart. 8 L bin, 10 in entrance, 3.3–22 lb cats.
- Cat IDCamera + weight
- Cat weight3.3–22 lb
- Entrance height10.03 in
- Waste bin8 L, up to 17 days for 1 cat
- Dimensions25.86 × 21.18 × 23.74 in
- Wi-Fi2.4 / 5 GHz
Manufacturer list price: $499.99 (with Fence 2.0) (petkit.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
If you want to know which cat used the box and how often, this is the one to look at. It adds a camera to weight sensing, and PETKIT says that lets it tell similar-weight cats apart. Weight-only boxes can't do that. Wirecutter picked it for cleaning well and for an app with "a ton of info." Keep in mind the 22 lb cat limit, a smaller interior than the Litter-Robot 4 (per Wirecutter), and a subscription if you want 30-day video history.
What we like
- Camera plus weight ID
- Wirecutter pick
- 8 L bin, up to 17 days with one cat (PETKIT)
Watch-outs
- 22 lb cat limit
- Video history needs a subscription
- Smaller inside than the Litter-Robot 4 (Wirecutter)
Petlibro Luma: best uncovered
Petlibro
Luma Smart Litter Box
Uncovered globe with a downward camera that Petlibro says identifies up to 10 cats. 11 L drawer rated for about 7 days with 2 cats.
- Cat IDCamera, up to 10 cats
- Cat weight2.2–22 lb
- Entrance17.4 in
- Waste drawer11 L; up to 7 days for 2 cats
- Noise (maker)35–47 dB by fan speed
- Trial / warranty90-day trial; 24 months
Manufacturer list price: $599.99 (petlibro.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
Plenty of cats don't like hoods, and Cornell notes most cats prefer uncovered boxes. The Luma is a self-cleaner without one: an open globe with a 17.4 in entrance and camera ID for up to 10 cats. Wirecutter picked it for cats who prefer uncovered boxes, but warned that saving footage needs a pricey subscription and that support was slow for one tester. It needs a hard floor, and the cat limit is 22 lb.
What we like
- No hood
- Wide 17.4 in entrance
- Camera ID for multiple cats
- 90-day trial; 24-month warranty (Petlibro)
Watch-outs
- $599.99 list price
- Saved footage costs extra
- Hard floors only
- 22 lb cat limit
PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic: cheapest way in
PetSafe
ScoopFree Crystal Classic
The cheapest way into self-cleaning at $99.95. One cat up to 15 lb, disposable crystal trays, no app.
- Cat weightUp to 15 lb
- Kittens6 months+ (PetSafe)
- LitterScoopFree crystal trays
- Dimensions20.4 × 7.1 × 28.0 in
- AppNo
- Returns45 days
Manufacturer list price: $99.95 (petsafe.com, checked Oct 19, 2026). Prices change; retailer prices may differ.
At $99.95, it's the cheapest automatic box from an established brand. A rake sweeps waste into a covered section of a disposable crystal-litter tray. When the tray's used up, you throw the whole thing away. It's for one cat up to 15 lb, at least 6 months old, that's comfortable with crystal litter. There's no app. Budget for trays too: you'll keep buying them as long as you own the box, so the low price isn't the whole cost.
What we like
- $99.95 list price
- No scooping and no litter to pour
- Simple, no app or Wi-Fi
Watch-outs
- One cat up to 15 lb
- You keep buying PetSafe crystal trays
- No app or tracking
Also worth a look
- PetSafe ScoopFree OpenSky ($549.99): open top and the highest cat weight rating we found (33 lb). It's our pick for heavy cats in the large cats guide.
- Litter-Robot 5 ($799): rated for cats from 3 to 30 lb and up to 5 cats. Wirecutter hadn't tested the camera-free version when we checked.
- Litter-Robot EVO ($599): a smaller Litter-Robot for 1–2 cats up to 19 lb, for tighter spaces.
All of these, plus 14 more, are in our full comparison.
The costs nobody puts on the box
- Litter: most of these use regular clumping litter. PetSafe crystal models need PetSafe trays.
- Bags and liners: the Litter-Robot 4 takes ordinary 8–13 gal bags (Whisker). PETKIT recommends its own bags.
- Subscriptions: longer history or saved video costs extra on Whisker, PETKIT and Petlibro.
- A backup box: vet guidance still says one box per cat, plus one. A cheap plain box also covers power outages and deep-clean days. See our guide to the best litter box for multiple cats.
FAQ
Are automatic litter boxes worth it?
For healthy adult cats inside the machine's weight range, usually yes, if you have the floor space and don't mind emptying a drawer. They're a poor fit for kittens under the weight minimum and cats that get scared by motion or noise. Our buyer's guide goes deeper.
What's the difference between an automatic and a self-cleaning litter box?
Nothing, really. Brands and shoppers use both names for the same thing: a box that separates waste from clean litter on its own after your cat leaves.
What's the best automatic litter box for multiple cats?
The Litter-Robot 4 (up to 4 cats, per Whisker) or the Open-X Multi-Cat on a budget. Weight-based cat ID can mix up cats within about a pound of each other, so a camera model helps if per-cat tracking matters. See our multi-cat self-cleaning guide.
Do I still need to clean an automatic litter box?
Yes, just less often. You'll empty the waste drawer, top up the litter and do a full clean now and then. The schedule depends on how many cats you have, and Whisker publishes one for the Litter-Robot 4.
Will my cat use it?
Most cats adjust, but some take time. A common approach: leave it switched off for the first few days so it works like a normal box, keep the old box nearby at first, and put a little used litter in the new one. If a cat stops using any box, check with your vet first. Cornell lists many medical causes of house soiling.
